EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DR. CAROL BARSBY

Hello! I'm Dr. Carol Barsby, Executive Director of the Literacy Council! As a teacher, I taught reading at every level K-12. At the Literacy Council, I love teaching and training tutors, but best of all are the nights when adults walk across a stage to receive their high school diploma. The degrees I hold are: Bachelor's in Elementary Education, Master's in Reading, and an Education Specialist doctoral degree.

Literacy Tutors

CAREEN BARSBY

My name is Careen Barsby, and the degrees I hold are: Master's degree in Special Education  and an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education.

My favorite part of being an AmeriCorps member is being able to help others who want to better  themselves.  I specialize in working with the judicial system and their clientele.  We are lucky here in Laclede County that everyone believes in second chances and works to make them happen.

I enjoy raising goats on my farm in Crocker through my LLC.

JOSHUA BASS

My name is Josh Bass and I serve as an AmeriCorps member in Lebanon, Missouri with the Literacy Council.

After graduating from Lebanon High School, I went to the University of California, Santa Cruz and received a Bachelor’s in Arts in American Studies and a Master’s in Arts Degree in Education.  I became excited about teaching as a middle school teacher on the island of Guam.  I am dedicated as a tutor to help people achieve their goal of getting their High School Equivalency Diploma.

TAMMY STONE

My name is Tammy and I am a military veteran who served in the Air Force overseas at Ramstein AFB, Germany and then at McConnell AFB Wichita, KS. Currently I am living on my family farm and  tutoring at the Laclede Literacy Council.  This is an  opportunity I would have missed had I not stumbled on an ad for the position on Facebook looking for tutors. I have earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Education, and this is  the perfect chance for me to help make a difference in other people's lives.

REINA GODINEZ

Hi I am Reina.  I was born in Mexico and came to the United States in 1989. I moved to Lebanon in 2001.  I have been studying English at the center for three plus years now.  I am now an ESL tutor.  I help others learn to speak, read and write English. I also help with the Meals on Wheels program.

LAURA VALENTI

My name is Laura Valenti and while I was born in St. Louis, I must admit, mine has been a rather eclectic life thanks be to God. As a child, my family often traveled in Mexico where I later attended school briefly and I’ve been blessed to be part of several mission trips to Guatemala, El Salvador, and Dominican Republic. In the 1970s, my husband, Warren and I were Peace Corps volunteers in El Salvador. He worked in fisheries and I taught English to junior high schoolers and Spanish reading stud

Daniel Ford

Hi! My name is Daniel Ford. I was born and raised in Lebanon, MO. This is my first year as an AmeriCorps member. I'm currently working on completing my HiSet while simultaneously helping others in my home town achieve theirs. I feel very privileged to be an AmeriCorps member and also able to give back to my community.

Tammy Sloan

My name is Tammy Sloan and I was born in Muskogee, OK. I moved to Lebanon, MO in 1987. I'm married and have a son, daughter and three beautiful grand babies. I love spending time with my family while I work on completing my HiSet. I am looking forward to my time as an AmeriCorps member serving the Laclede LIteracy Council.
