Hello! I'm Dr. Carol Barsby, Executive Director of the Literacy Council! As a teacher, I taught reading at every level K-12. At the Literacy Council, I love teaching and training tutors, but best of all are the nights when adults walk across a stage to receive their high school diploma. The degrees I hold are: Bachelor's in Elementary Education, Master's in Reading, and an Education Specialist doctoral degree.
My name is Careen Barsby, and the degrees I hold are: Master's degree in Special Education and an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education.
My favorite part of being a AmeriCorps member is being able to help others who want to better themselves. I specialize in working with the judicial system and their clientele. We are lucky here in Laclede County that everyone believes in second chances and works to make them happen.
I enjoy raising goats on my farm in Crocker through my LLC.
My name is Josh Bass and I serve as an AmeriCorps member in Lebanon, Missouri with the Literacy Council.
After graduating from Lebanon High School, I went to the University of California, Santa Cruz and received a Bachelor’s in Arts in American Studies and a Master’s in Arts Degree in Education. I became excited about teaching as a middle school teacher on the island of Guam. I am dedicated as a tutor to help people achieve their goal of getting their High School Equivalency Diploma
Bessie Gibeaut has a heart for paying it forward by helping others obtain their HISET, after utilizing the Literacy Council's tutoring to continue her own education. Bessie has three kids and two grandchildren who she is very devoted to.
Salutations! My name is Lane, I'm a college student at OTC. I received my HiSet through the Laclede Literacy Council. I am determined to help promote education and knowledge to students in our community.
Hello! My name is Meagan Howe, I am proud to serve my hometown of Lebanon at the Literacy Council as an AmeriCorps member. I have a JD from MU in Columbia, and an MBA from UMKC. I am passionate about HISET preparation, because it is meaningful to the students and their family legacies, and impacts the community overall in poverty and crime reduction. I also enjoy our service projects to help those in poverty. My 5 year old Olivia has decided she wants to help people learn when she grows up too.
My name is Tammy and I am a military veteran served in the USAF overseas at Ramstein, Germany and then at McConnell AFB Wichita, KS. Currently I am living on my family farm and tutoring at Boswell Elementary in Lebanon. This is an opportunity I would have missed had I not stumbled on an ad for the position on Facebook looking for tutors. I have earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Education, and this is the perfect chance for to help make a difference in young people's lives.
Hi I am Reina. I was born in Mexico and came to the United States in 1989. I came Lebanon in 2001. I have been studying English at the center for threes and now I am a tutor. I help others learn to speak read and write English. I also help with the Meals on Wheels program.
Dr. John Sode is in his second year as an AmeriCorp member at the Literacy Council. He specializes in math tutoring and is a wonderful asset to the team after retiring from a long tenure in the public education system.
My name is Laura Valenti and while I was born in St. Louis, I must admit, mine has been a rather eclectic life thanks be to God. As a child, my family often traveled in Mexico where I later attended school briefly and I’ve been blessed to be part of several mission trips to Guatemala, El Salvador, and Dominican Republic. In the 1970s, my husband, Warren and I were Peace Corps volunteers in El Salvador. He worked in fisheries and I taught English to junior highers and Spanish reading.
